Our Readers

Readers are lay ministers in the Church of England, they are called by God and are theologically trained and licensed by a diocesan Bishop to preach, teach and carry out such pastoral work that is entrusted to them.  Their distinctive lay ministry means they are not 'clergy substitutes' but they do share in some aspects of church life as well as living out their ministries in their local community.  Their ministries are often diverse and usually encompass the gifts they have already received from God as well as developing new gifts or, in many cases, helping to develop other peoples gifts.  Readers can be found in many churches in the Newcastle Diocese, working collaboratively with clergy and with other lay people to further the work of God's mission in the world.
